Meet Ced, affectionately known as "Fat Boy." Ced has renovated and opened a recording studio in a newly revitalized urban district in Northern Liberties, Fat Boy Records was created to be more than just a recording studio. The founder and producer envisioned the space as a creative sanctuary where emerging musicians, singers and podcasters could develop their sound, sharpen their craft and feel inspired the moment they walked through the door.

As redevelopment brought new energy, businesses and foot traffic into the neighborhood, Fat Boy Records positioned itself as a bridge between the area’s cultural roots and its modern future. The challenge was creating a brand identity that felt authentic to the streets, approachable to new creators and polished enough to compete with larger studio spaces in nearby cities.

 

The goal was clear: build a brand that looked professional without losing its underground soul.

STRATEGY

The strategy centered around creating a visual identity that felt both artistic and accessible. Rather than leaning into stereotypical “music industry” visuals, the branding focused on personality, creativity and local culture.

 

The brand needed to appeal to:     

 

  • Independent musicians looking for affordable, high-quality studio time

  • Vocalists seeking a comfortable recording environment     

  • Podcasters wanting a professional but relaxed atmosphere     

  • Young creatives drawn to authentic urban culture

 

To accomplish this, the visual system balanced three key ideas:     

 

  1. Street culture authenticity     

  2. Professional studio credibility     

  3. Creative freedom and individuality

 

The identity also needed to work across storefront signage, merchandise, social media graphics, apparel, streaming promotions and recording session content.

DESIGN DIRECTION

The design process began with one unexpected source of inspiration: pandas — the owner’s favorite animal.

 

Early concept sketches explored pandas in expressive poses wearing headphones, holding microphones and interacting with sound equipment. Rather than making the panda mascot feel cartoonish, the illustrations evolved into a symbolic creative character representing calm confidence, individuality and artistic focus.

 

From there, the typography became the centerpiece of the identity system.

 

A modern, highly readable script font was customized with:     

 

• Graffiti-inspired brush strokes     

• Sharp paint-marker highlights     

• Urban texture overlays     

• Layered shadow treatments

The final logo merged polished studio professionalism with raw artistic energy. The contrast between clean lettering and expressive graffiti accents reflected the exact experience the studio aimed to provide: structured creativity without creative restrictions.

 

The visual language expanded into:     

 

• Industrial-inspired color palettes     

• Bold black-and-white contrasts     

• Accent colors pulled from street art and neon studio lighting     

• Social templates designed to spotlight artists and podcast guests     

• Environmental graphics that transformed the studio itself into part recording space, part creative gallery

The Fat Boy Recording Studio color palette was designed to reflect the energy of underground music culture while honoring the industrial character of the neighborhood’s redevelopment. Inspired by street art, recording studio lighting, brick architecture and late-night creative sessions, the palette balances bold intensity with modern sophistication.

 

The combination of vivid accents and grounded neutrals creates a visual identity that feels expressive, authentic and unmistakably urban.     

 

  • Red Alert — energetic, rebellious and attention-grabbing     

  • Onyx — deep matte black representing professionalism and studio culture     

  • Granny Smith — vibrant electric green adding freshness and creative energy     

  • Pop Smoke — cool smoky gray inspired by concrete, soundproof foam and urban textures     

  • Old Brick — warm weathered red reflecting the neighborhood’s industrial roots and redevelopment story

 

Together, the palette creates a bold urban aesthetic that feels modern, gritty and artist-driven while still remaining polished and highly recognizable.

THE SOLUTION

The final brand identity established Fat Boy Records as a recognizable creative destination within the neighborhood’s redevelopment movement.

 

The branding system included:     

 

  • Primary and secondary logo systems     

  • Illustrated panda iconography     

  • Social media graphics and artist promo templates     

  • Studio signage and environmental branding     

  • Podcast cover templates     

  • Apparel and merchandise concepts     

  • Marketing assets for music releases and events

 

The studio’s visual identity helped communicate that creators of all experience levels were welcome. Whether someone was recording their first single or launching a podcast series, the branding reinforced the idea that Fat Boy Records was built for creators who wanted professional results without losing their authenticity.

THE RESULTS & REFLECTION

The launch of the new branding immediately elevated the studio’s visibility both online and within the surrounding neighborhood.

 

Within months:     

 

  • Artist bookings increased steadily through word-of-mouth and social sharing     

  • Podcast creators began using the studio as a recurring production space   

  • Branded merchandise became an additional revenue stream     

  • Social engagement improved through visually consistent promotional content     

  • The studio established a recognizable identity within the city’s growing creative scene

 

Most importantly, the branding helped position Fat Boy Records as more than a studio rental space. It became known as a creative hub where artists felt supported, respected and inspired to experiment. Fat Boy Records demonstrates how thoughtful branding can transform a physical location into a cultural experience. By combining modern typography, graffiti influences and the unexpected personality of panda-inspired artwork, the final identity captured both the grit and optimism of a changing urban neighborhood. The project proved that strong branding is not about chasing trends — it’s about building something honest enough for people to connect with emotionally. For Fat Boy Records, that honesty became the foundation for a growing community of artists, creators and storytellers determined to make noise on their own terms.
